One of our favorite scouting activities is camping and one of our favorite camping activities is eating! So, we’ve done a lot of experimenting with different types of outdoor cooking in our 12 years of girl scouting and we’ve tried cooking lots of gourmet recipes outdoors.
In October 2010 we hosted an encampment at Sweetwater Regional Park in San Diego County for Sunnytrails Service Unit and the highlight of the weekend was a Saturday afternoon cookout featuring many different types of outdoor cooking methods and many favorite recipes. Each troop researched and cooked up a different tasty item and participants got to wander from campsite to campsite learning and trying samples of different treats.
This book, called "Outdoor Gourmet" is a compilation of those recipes, tips and directions. We want to thank each of the Sunnytrails troops that participated in the weekend and submitted recipes, drawings and expertise.
We hope that the information and recipes in our book will help you plan amazing campouts and will perhaps help in an emergency when you need to feed your family without the conveniences of your modern kitchen.
We plan to use the proceeds from the cookbook to travel to Maine and volunteer at Camp Sunshine, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, next summer. Thanks for helping us with that goal.
